Practice the MMPI
So let’s begin and learn how to Pass the MMPI test by practice and understanding the basic concepts of how the test will examine you…….
1) Problems with How to Pass the MMPI-2 Test during certain times
During certain periods of a persons life, giving a true answer to the questions will produce unwanted results. For example while divorce and custody issues are a central fixture in one’s life may produce a high score on the “Paranoia (Pa)” scale (“subject has strong, irrational suspicions and overestimates own importance”). Some of the questions that could trigger an elevated “Paranoia (Pa)” score are
“Someone has it in for me”
“I know who is responsible for most of my troubles”
“The future is too uncertain for a person to make serious plans”
In the context of a highly conflicted divorce, every one of those statements could be answered “yes” and the answers would likely be valid. Lets face it: Someone does have it in for you, and you do know who is responsible for most of your troubles- your ex.
2) The MMPI-2 Validity Scales: Learn how to Pass with Practice the MMPI
At the heart of beating the MMPI is beating the Validity Scales. These are a complicated and difficult aspect of the MMPI and as such are usually not disclosed to the person taking the test. They are used to determine if the person taking the test is being honest.
In the Cheat Sheet you will learn to understand how the Validity scales work (because you can not manipulate the test without knowing how right?)
The Validity scales determine 11 categories, in which; if your not answering truthfully (or consistency) then your likely to make mistakes in the various questions that relate to each scale. Following is a table showing how many questions relate to each scale, then examples under each heading. Due to the complexity of the assessment criteria sometimes the questions do not seem to correspond, this ensures it is difficult to fake the MMPI. Points are given or removed to determine high or low scores based on the differences.
Abbreviation | No of Q | Description | Assesses |
---|---|---|---|
CNS | 30+ No Answer | “Cannot Say” | Questions not answered |
L | 15 | Lie | Client “faking good” |
F | 60 | Infrequency | Client “faking bad” (in first half of test) |
K | 30 | Defensiveness | Denial/Evasiveness |
Fb | 40 | Back F | Client “faking bad” (in last half of test) |
VRIN | 67 | Variable Response Inconsistency | Answering similar/opposite question pairs inconsistently |
TRIN | 23 | True Response Inconsistency | Answering questions all true/all false |
The “Cannot Say” Scale (“? scale”) 15-30 questions unanswered make the test invalid)
The “?” scale is simply the number of omitted items (including items answered both true and false). The MMPI-2 manual suggests that protocols with 30 or more omitted items should be considered invalid and not interpreted. This will make your test results invalid
L Scale – 15 Questions are use to determine this
The L scale originally was constructed to detect a deliberate and rather unsophisticated attempt on the part of the respondent to present him/herself in a favorable light. E.g.
Q3 (T) I wake up Fresh and restored in the Mornings
Q39 (F) My sleep is fitful and disturbed
Q9 (T) My daily life is full of things that keep me interested
Q56 (F) I wish I could be as happy as others seem to be
F Scale – 60 Questions use to determine this

Q84 (F) I was suspended from school one or more times for bad behavior.
Q96 (F) I see things or animals or people around me that others do not see.
Q51 (T) I do not read every editorial in the newspaper every day.
Q55 (T) I sometimes keep on at a thing until others lose their patience with me.

The Fb scale consists of 40 items on the MMPI-2 in the 2nd half to see if your faking a bad response.
K Scale – 30 Questions use to determine this
Compared to the L Scale, the K Scale was developed as a more subtle and more effective index of attempts by examiners to deny psychopathology. E.g.
Q157 (F) What others think of me does not bother me.
Q158 (F) It makes me uncomfortable to pull a stunt at a party even when others are doing the same sort of things.
Q83 (T) I have very few quarrels with members of my family.

Q3 I wake up Fresh and restored in the Mornings
Q39 My sleep is fitful and disturbed
Q9 My daily life is full of things that keep me interested
Q56 I wish I could be as happy as others seem to be
TRIN Scale (True Response Inconsistency) – 23 Questions use to determine this
The TRIN scale was developed to identify persons who respond inconsistently to items by giving true responses to items indiscriminately or by giving false responses to items indiscriminately. E.g.
Q209 I like to talk about sex.
Q351 I am embarrassed by dirty stories.
Q125 I believe that my home life is as pleasant as that of most people I know.
Q195 There is very little love and companionship in my family as compared to other homes.
